Duties

  • Ensure collections from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet federal curatorial facility standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Provide professional recommendations, guidance, and interpretation on the significance of archeological sites, historic or prehistoric structures or objects identified during surveys.
  • Document and report to management information regarding collections deposited at curation facilities and compile data for the annual heritage report.
  • Write and prepare heritage and paleontological resource input for environmental documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA).

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: (1) conducting routine archeological inventories to include site testing and excavation; (2) documenting, analyzing, and/or reporting curatorial data; (3) interacting and/or providing heritage resources information to various groups such as the management, land owners, state and tribal government officials, and the public; (4) carrying out educational and outreach programs to schools and community events.

Education: Have two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements generally as stated in the basic requirements. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. FOR GS-11:


In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties such as: (1) implementing heritage resource management strategies in accordance with National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 and other regulations; (2) documenting, reporting, or determining the importance of curatorial data and archeological inventories; (3) recommending strategies to mitigate/resolve heritage resource conflicts or controversial issues.

Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.



Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1)history of archeology; 2)archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3)regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4)theory and methods of archeology which include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; 5)archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying AND archeological field school.

Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements as seen above (including archeological field school).

Experience: Have four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
