Job Description
We are looking for a dynamic and knowledgeable Subject Matter Expert to serve as the Caribbean Course Instructor. This exciting opportunity involves teaching foreign affairs professionals about the cultural, political, and economic forces shaping the Caribbean region. The course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in or on the Caribbean, focusing on countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Belize, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and The Bahamas.
Course Objective: The goal of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the key historical, cultural, political, and economic factors that continue to influence the Caribbean nations today. Participants will gain insight into how these factors impact U.S.-Caribbean relations, as well as the current domestic and international developments affecting these countries. Through a combination of lectures, class discussions, field trips, documentaries, debates, and oral presentations, the course offers a unique and interactive learning experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Course Management: Lead and manage the course delivery, either remotely or in person, depending on customer requirements. Organize all aspects of the course, ensuring a smooth and effective learning experience for all participants.
Instructional Delivery: Deliver dynamic lectures and facilitate discussions in areas of expertise. Be prepared to substitute for scheduled speakers if necessary and ensure a consistent classroom experience.
Engagement: Use a variety of teaching techniques, such as class discussions, group exercises, and self-study, to ensure effective learning in an online classroom environment. Engage students with interactive methods and materials, such as presentations, case studies, and debate.
Guest Lecturers: Identify and invite qualified guest speakers from the government, academic, diplomatic, and business sectors. Coordinate and manage guest speaker participation, ensuring approval and honorarium payments as necessary.
Course Materials: Maintain and update course materials, including PowerPoint presentations, to ensure they are accurate, relevant, and aligned with FSI's branding and templates. Ensure that all materials are ready prior to course delivery.
Collaboration: Meet with the Area Studies Chair for planning and after-action reviews. Collaborate with support staff to ensure all technical aspects of the course, including online setup and resources, are effectively managed.
Course Evaluation: Coordinate with the Program Coordinator to distribute course evaluations and encourage participants to provide feedback for continuous course improvement.
Qualifications:
Educational Requirements: A Master's degree is required; a PhD is preferred.
Experience: Proven experience in instructional design, professional training, or academic teaching, with a focus on engaging and interactive teaching methods for adult learners. Experience in online course delivery is a plus.
Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in the Caribbean region, evidenced by teaching, published works, media appearances, or other professional recognition in the field.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, concise, and error-free course materials.
Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Advanced knowledge of online learning platforms such as Zoom is essential.
Other Requirements: Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and effectively collaborate with diverse teams. Must be able to provide print-ready materials with consistent formatting.
