The Department of International Languages & Cultures at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for the three-year position of Lecturer of Chinese (Mandarin) beginning August 1, 2025. Lecturer teaches the equivalent of seven courses a year (three four-credit courses a semester plus two one-credit conversation courses), coordinates the Chinese program, assists the Asian Studies program and has nominal research expectations. The lecturer has the opportunity to shape and grow the Chinese program. Applicants with expertise in foreign language pedagogy, second language education, Chinese language/linguistics, cultural studies, literature, or other related fields are encouraged to apply. Lecturers report directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, and may be assigned to the supervision of a department chair. The Lecturer position is a termed contract of three years. Contingent upon successful evaluation and ongoing need as determined by the VPAA, the contract is renewable. Lecturers receive full health benefits and are eligible for promotion and merit-based raises. Salary range is $66,000-$69,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Chinese or related field, Ph.D. preferred, and be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Teaching responsibilities include Chinese language, literature and culture at all levels and may include courses in Asian Studies. Teaching experience in North America is required. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is desirable.
