Job Description

NYU's Los Angeles Program is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach an undergraduate course that will explore the paths to entrepreneurial success in the music business. The course will be under the sponsorship of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts? Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. The course is expected to be taught in the Fall 2025 semester (January - May) and will take place in the academic center in the Fairfax/La Brea area of Los Angeles.

Course Description

Billboard?s influential 2018 Power 100 list of the most powerful executives in music marked a turning point for women in the industry when it was unveiled. For the first time in the list?s then seven-year history, two female executives ranked in the top 10?including a single female executive, who was all the way up at No. 8. But just three days after leading executives like Universal Music Publishing Group?s Jody Gerson and Universal Music Group?s Michele Anthony were feted by Billboard and their peers, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow made controversial remarks after the 60th annual Grammy Awards about how he thought women "need to step up" to achieve true parity with their male peers. But as the Power 100 and countless other industry resources had previously proven, women had already been stepping up for years. The Recording Academy was criticized for these unfair remarks that ultimately led to the creation of a task force seeking to revamp the voting members to better reflect the growing ranks of accomplished females. And the dominance of Taylor Swift and Beyonce clearly demonstrate women are in charge. This class will give students the history, access and tools to build a career towards becoming one of those women. Each week,  class discussions will detail the skills, savvy and connections needed to become a successful entrepreneur. We will also welcome guest speakers who represent female entrepreneurs and high-ranking executives (or intrapreneurs) from different aspects of the music business. By the end of the course, students should be able to craft a short and long-term plan for their own career as a future executive, as well as their first venture.

Course Goals

  • Explore paths to entrepreneurial success in the music business

  • Identify and understand the traits of successful entrepreneurs and how to adopt them

  • Take an idea from conceptualization to market

  • Through reflection, class work and conversations with leading women entrepreneurs in music, critically assess the factors and best practices needed achieve entrepreneurial success

  • Consider how opportunities for women entrepreneurs in music can be realized
